I Am Jackson: Dr. Marlon King

Dr. Marlon King

What is your hometown?

I’m originally from Brownsville, Tennessee. The opportunity to serve as Superintendent of the Jackson-Madison County School System brought me here in 2020 at a time when our community needed strong leadership to navigate through a global pandemic. My family and I have been fortunate to call Jackson home for the past four and a half years.

What is your profession, and what led you to choose it?

I’m an educator. My passion for helping children, particularly young children, has been a driving force in my life and career. It’s a profound privilege to be able to make a difference in their lives.

Where have you volunteered or contributed your time in efforts to give back?

I’ve been fortunate to contribute my time to several organizations dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in our community. My board service includes the Boys & Girls Club of Jackson, the Community Foundation, the United Way of West Tennessee, Partnership Tennessee, LeMoyne-Owen College, and the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents (TOSS), among others.

What are some of your favorite things about Jackson?

Jackson has a wonderful blend of Southern charm and a vibrant community spirit. I appreciate its rich history, its welcoming people, and the strong sense of civic pride. It’s a place where people genuinely care about each other and work together to create a better future. At the end of the day, people here truly care!

Three words that best describe you.

Unifier. Service-provider. Believer.

Favorite thing to do in Jackson?

I truly enjoy the Symphony Pops events sponsored by the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, a delightful blend of fantastic music, delicious food courtesy of the Jackson’s Kitchen + Catering, and wonderful company. It’s an excellent example of Jackson’s cultural vibrancy.

What is one thing that you do not go a day without?

I couldn’t make it through a day without prayer and gratitude for God’s blessings.

Finish this statement, I AM JACKSON because...

This is where I can make the greatest difference, where collaboration thrives, and where a brighter future for our children is not just a hope, but a shared reality we are actively building together. #winning
